Abstract

Among those who played a major role in the development and propagation of Buddhism, four names have been very important in about two and a half thousand years of Buddhism - 'Tathagata Buddha' who himself has been the original originator of Buddhism, 'Emperor Ashoka' ' The one who propagated this religion to other countries outside India, 'Harshavardhan' through whom Buddhism was given a very strong shelter and 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who is still known in world history as the restorer of Buddhism.  Along with this, non-citizen Dharmapal, Bhadant Anand Kaushalyayan, Honorable Kanshi Ram and Mayawati etc. have made invaluable contribution in the propagation of Buddhism. Modern education has exposed the social and religious hollowness of Brahminism, exposed the futility of Varna and caste.  On the other hand Buddhism has influenced the spirit of equality, liberty and fraternity and moral education in public life. Therefore, the propagation of this Dhamma once again reminds us of Ashoka era India. If this wave of renaissance continues, the day is not far when India will be established as an "enlightened India".
